The Basics of Basketball Betting
Many people believe betting on basketball is easier than any other sport, and for good reason. Of course, the most common way to wager on hoops is according to the point spread. In a point spread setup, one team is always favored to win, sometimes by many points and sometimes by just a few. This “spread” is used to determine the “handicap,” which is the amount of points the favored team is scheduled to win by. When you bet on a game with a spread, you are not only betting on a win, but also on the probability that they will win by at least what the spread dictates.
Some sports books offer an “over-under” option which is also pretty simple as you will bet against a preset total of points scored based on probability. You can bet that the total game points will be either higher or lower than the stat number, hence the name. Unfortunately there is always a chance that the total points scored will exactly equal the set number which results in a “push,” which means nobody wins.
Overall, basketball betting is popular because it is simply based on betting with or against the “favorite,” or the team that should win. Of course, it wasn’t always this way, but with information becoming more accessible and sports moving to television, the increased exposure has made it easier for bettors to consistently determine the winner. One of the ways around these advanced statisticians is the parlay, for instance, which requires you to correctly determine winners on a handful of games.
Casual gamblers typically choose to go with the first couple of options because there is much less work but also less risk. Those really looking to make some money, though, tend to run with bets like the parlay because of the higher potential payout.
