Singapore is Gambling at its Low Crime Rate: Unveils a Push of $ 10.2 Billion
Singapore stated as one of the safest and most lively country of the world by the US Overseas Security Advisory Council dropped the 45-year ban on casinos to shed its unexciting and dull image.
In order to double the tourism revenue by the year 2015, the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong decided to create temptation of money for the tourists with the help of casinos. The casinos have approximately attracted more than three million visitors who are spending on hotels, restaurants and shopping introducing a major boost in Singapore economy. The casinos will add about 0.8 percent to the gross revenue of the country. According to the Karen Tang an economic analyst “The revenue may rise almost 50 percent towards the end of this year”.
Since the opening of Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands in February and April respectively a major enhancement is seen in the economy as well as the crime cases. Both the resorts created thousand s of jobs as $4.7 billion Resorts World Sentosa features a Universal Studio Inc Theme Park along with the casino. The $5.5 billion Marina Bay Land owes a casino and conventional amenities like a shopping mall and 2560 hotel rooms etc.
However, along with a boost in revenue Singapore is facing some undesirable activities due to casino gaming. Per-capita crime rate of the country was about one-third of that of New York City as stated by Law Minster K.Shanmugam in 2008 however after the opening of casinos the island-state faced some cases of fraud, identity theft, money laundering and embezzlement. Some of the lawbreakers were fined and sent to prisons.
Two Africans were accused for cheating the casinos out of about $ 102,000. Michael Ang, Head of Casino Crime Investigation Branch says that police is prohibiting entries in the casino for loan shark syndicate members, money launders, pimps and drug suppliers to avoid any undesirable situation.
