Internet Gambling Enforcement Act Faces a Committee Hearing
A hearing on United States House Representative, Barney Frank’s Bill to regulate and legalize internet gambling was held in the House Financial Service Committee. This discussion was not able to come to any final decision. However, a committee vote on this issue is expected to be organized this coming week.
Formally titled as H.R. 2267, the Bill on Internet Gambling, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act emphasizes on the legitimization of online gambling by the Government of United States.
Professional poker player, Annie Duke was representing the Poker Players Alliance, said in a statement,” It makes no sense to stop the people from enjoying a challenging and stimulating source of entertainment like online gambling and I would like to impel everyone related to this issue to support this enforcement law.”
Testimonies from several well known personalities, such as Ed Williams, representative of the Credit Union National Association, Tom Malkasian, on behalf of the Commerce Casino and Michael Fagan, were entertained during the committee hearing.
Spencer Bachus deplored saying that this act can adversely affect the minors and problem gamblers. He strongly argues saying, “There is no point in supporting casinos in every home, mobile, iPod and libraries!”
However, Duke successfully defended her point against Bachus’ line by pointing out the fact that the Unlawful Internet Gambling act does nothing to keep the minors and problem gamblers away from these sites. Thus, the US government should take a serious step in protecting the users as the Internet Gambling is not going anywhere. However, it is becoming more and more popular day by day.
The discussion continued for approximately two hours, after which the hearing was adjourned.
Statements to revise the whole issue can be added during the markup and vote, which is likely to be conducted the next week. One such amendment proposed is a loss limit clause which would put a constraint on the wagers entertained by the online gambling sites from the players.
If the bill is successful enough to gather a significant number of votes during the markup, then it would be passed to the main House of Representatives for further assessments.
