The Choctaws Indians Tribe own about thirty five thousand acres in Mississippi State of USA. The tribal council in their meeting at June 8, 2010 planned to build 27,000 square-foot casino building with 500 to 700 operating slot machines along with a snack shop near Sandersville in Pine Belt Region.
However, the Governor Haley Barbour asks the tribe on Tuesday to withdraw the plan of having their casino in Jones County. According to Barbour the casino will be a threat to the ecological system of the Pine Belt Region. “The casino will damage the health of the local inhabitants, birds, snakes and jeopardize tortoises living in that area”, He added. In his letter to the Chief of Choctaws tribe Barbour said “It is inconsistent with the gaming polices of the State to expand gambling casinos in such a way weather on tribal lands or in State waters”.
Barbour also requested Attorney General Jim Hood to take personal interest in the matter and block the development of the casino. According to Governor the County won’t obtain any tax returns from the casino instead it will be a source of disturbance and amplification in the traffic of the County. Other elected official who spoke up in opposition to the casino plan include Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S Rep Gregg Harper.
The above-mentioned casino will be the second expansion for gambling of Choctaws in the area. They already operate two adjacent casinos in Neshoba County. These casinos are not operated by the State. The State operates almost 30 casinos along the waters of Mississippi River and on the Gulf Coast.
