Illinois 10th casino license

The state of Illinois’ tenth and only unused casino license is now up for grabs. As of this Friday, July 18, applications for bids on the license are being made available. The applications are due back later this year. The Illinois gaming board expects to have the tenth casino up and running within the next year. There are already nine riverboat casino operations in the state and many bidders on the gaming scene are to be expected. The license once belonged to Emerald Casino which went bankrupt and was being investigated for for having ties to mob-related activities. It is alleged that some of the investors were tied to the mob. These claims undermined the integrity of the company and the license was revoked so as not to further undermine the integrity of the industry.

This license has been unused for over a year due to the length of litigation proceedings to prove reasons for its revocation. Some complain that due to this the state has lost out on well needed revenue. However, the wait will soon be over. Considering the fact that this is the only option for expansion a significant number of applications are expected. The applications will be reviewed and three of the lot will be selected before the end of this year. From that set, a bidder will be chosen and evaluated to ensure that there is no repeat of the prior license revocation. If the top bidder is not seen as suitable then the runner up will automatically be considered. The criteria being looked at includes how high the bid is as well as what additional incentives there may be for the state. The state of the economy has raised concern for some. Some argue this may not be the best time to be looking for high bidders.

The fact that the license is now up for grabs not only affects those bidding on it but also affects communities that are potential hosts of the new casino. Some communities which have been marketed as great spots for a casino in the past or already have casinos are among the popular options. Therefore, the competition among prospective sites is also a key factor. Plans for building the casino in a particular site will of course affect the decision to choose a certain gambling company over another. Various sites will also send in applications to be considered as sites for the new casino.
