Cherokee casino gambling
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino has decided to continue its efforts to expand its casino by 2012. It is said that the expansion will cost over $650 million. The casino is already a large employer in North Carolina and no doubt with the expansion employment, along with other costs, is slated to increase. This plan for expansion, however, comes at a bad time as the state of the economy has taken a downturn in recent years. This has affected the amount of business that the gambling community has seen in this year. There has been a significant decrease in the number of patrons at the casino and reports indicate that there have been only flat revenues so far this year.
Plans for expansion at the casino have gone on despite the aforementioned setbacks. The management of the casino has stated that they are taking every measure possible to reduce costs while not reducing its hours of operation. It is no coincidence therefore that it has been suggested that the casino begin selling alcohol although on a reservation where the sale of alcohol is prohibited. The sale of alcohol would undoubtedly increase revenues and may even attract more gamblers who would usually go elsewhere.
However, selling alcohol anywhere on the reservation is a very controversial issue. Due to problems that may result from alcoholism many in the tribe are unwilling to endorse the sale of alcohol. The Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise Board, in charge of making decisions regarding the casino on behalf of the tribe, has proposed a referendum allowing them to serve alcohol at the casino. This proposal is well timed not only in light of the need to boost revenues but also because if this change is going to be made then it is best to do so before the renovations are complete so that any needed structural modifications can be fitted into the plan. This proposal has been made in the past but was withdrawn before it was voted on. The argument for that was the time was not right. The time seems to be right now more than ever.
Most tribal casinos serve alcohol and Harrah’s casino may soon join that group. The tribe leaders are set to discuss this as part of the agenda for August 7th. No doubt there is a demand for some alcohol at casinos. In fact, it is expected. There is a difference between selling alcohol and promoting or even permitting alcoholism. That’s a difference some hope the Tribe leaders can come to appreciate
