Atlantic City Passes Smoking Ban

The City Council has voted unanimously to ban smoking while on the gambling floor at all of the casinos in Atlantic City. The ban – which will be effective October 15th – was one of the last hurtles that stood in the way of the statewide ban that prevented people from smoking in any public buildings. Until now gambling halls were exempt from this ban.

This ban may prevent gamblers from lighting up while on the gambling floor – but they are still able to smoke while in the smoking lounge. Hundreds of casino workers have been praying that the ban would go into affect and showed their support by wearing t-shirts that said, “Nobody deserves to work in an ashtray.”

Dr. Arnold M. Baskies – the chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society stated, “The employees of Atlantic City’s casinos have hit a jackpot of their own tonight. Hard-working casino employees have been keeping Atlantic City’s multibillion-dollar casino industry on a roll, but have been gambling with their lives for far too long.”

“We’re going to save lives with this,” said Mayor Scott Evans. “People are going to be able to come here and enjoy a nice smoke-free environment.”

Atlantic City first tried to pass the ban back in 2007 – but backed down because they were warned by the casino industry that they would lose 20 percent of revenue and close to 3,000 jobs.

Caesars dealer – Kim Hesse – supports smoking and believes that the ban will cause them to lose some of their regulars who prefer to smoke while gambling – but she thinks that the number of people missing will be small and not affect them in anyway. “Think back just a few years ago: You could smoke in malls, you could smoke in restaurants, you could even smoke in hospitals,” she said. “Now you can’t, and it’s become the norm. People are used to it. “

MGM Mirage Forced To Let Employees Go Due To Poor Economy

MGM Mirage is letting go an estimated 400 management employees due to the new cost cutting program. The new program was launched last year by corporate because of the slow economy – which is causing many casinos to lose much of their profits. The Wall Street Journal reported the job cuts to be less than 1% of the total amount of workers that are employed by Mirage. They employ close to 66,000 employees all across the world.

At this time MGM runs 10 casino resorts all of which are located directly on the Las Vegas Strip. This is where they will also be building their new City Center – a mixed-use development. They are branching out beyond Vegas and are working on building casino hotels in Detroit, Mississippi, New Jersey, Atlantic City, and China’s Macau.

Alan Feldman – a spokesman for the company – went on record to say that the program was to help increase sales by efficiently reorganizing the casino and enforcing precise cost control.

Feldman went on to say that, “Although it has taken a few months, the economy’s impact can now clearly be seen in our industry. MGM Mirage’s revenues have softened and our operating margins are down from their usual levels.” The company is hoping to save around $75 million a year due to job cuts and the improvement of many of their business practices.

The Wall Street Journal was not the only one to comment on the lay-offs from Mirage. Celeste Mellet Brown – an analyst from Morgan Stanley lowered the estimated amount for the Mirage’s 2008 earnings this week. This is more proof that Las Vegas is losing its customers and the demand for casinos is waning.

“As MGM continues to lower its room rates to maximize occupancy, we feel additional estimate cuts are appropriate, especially for the mid-to-low end properties without an obvious customer draw,” Celeste Brown said in her research notes. She went on to say that she expects Mirage to earn around $1.83 per share instead of the $2.21 per share that she had originally predicted

Morgan Stanley went on record to say that they would not be releasing a price target on the stock for Mirage ”given the disparity of where we believe the stock should be trading fundamentally versus valuation based on the risk of corporate action.”

Trump Not Selling Atlantic City Casinos

Over the past year or so Donald Trump has been seeing talking with potential buyers and we have been waiting to see who was going to get their hands on it first. It seems though that Trump has changed his mind about things and decided not to sell. He made a statement this week stating that the casinos were not going up for sale. “We’re not looking at that,” he said. “We’re doing very nicely.”

While Trump did say that they weren’t for sale he didn’t officially say whether or not they were going to be taken off the market. There are rumors flying around that buyers are simply not interested at this time due to the impending credit and economy crisis.

Trump Entertainment Resorts runs and operates three casinos – which are all located in Atlantic City; Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Trump Taj Mahal, and Trump Marina Hotel Casino. Out off all three of these and according to the Casino Control Commission the Trump Taj Mahal brings in the most revenue with a total of $508.5 million just last year. This number pushed it to the fifth best casino out of the 11 in Atlantic City. Trump Plaza made a total of $208.3 million and Trump Marina made $241.9 million.

The casinos are making enough of a profit to keep them going and it doesn’t seem as if Trump is having a hard time trying to keep the gamblers coming. In fact Trump just attended a ‘topping off’ ceremony for the second tower that was added to the Taj Mahal. This new tower will open up Labor Day weekend and will add an extra 782 rooms to the hotel.

Trump is hoping that this new tower will help to bring in more of the high rollers – which is some of the clientele that they are missing. These new high rollers will help to pay off the $1.5 billion in debt that the company has.

“We’re really happy with what’s happening with the Taj Mahal,” stated Trump. “It’s going to be spectacular. It’s going to have the finest rooms in Atlantic City, and it’s going to set a new standard in Atlantic City for quality and luxury.”

How to play blackjack?

Blackjack Basics:

Blackjack can be played with anywhere from 1 to 8 decks of cards. More decks equals more of an advantage to the house, where as less decks equals more of an advantage for the player. Most casinos will offer a limited amount of tables with single or double-deck blackjack, with some not offering it whatsoever.

Table limits normally start at a minimum of $5 and have a maximum betting cap ranging anywhere from $100 to $50,000 (note: this figure ONLY exists at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas). Tables will normally accommodate up to 6 players, with the action starting from the dealer’s left to right. The dealer will always be the last to act in the game of Blackjack.

The game starts as soon as the player pushes in their bet into the appropriate betting circle. It should be noted that higher-denomination chips should be placed on the bottom of the stack, with lower-denomination ones being stacked towards the top. Once the dealer has instructed the players that no more bets can be placed, the cards will then be dealt out.

All cards that are dealt out to the player(s) are dealt face-up, with the dealer taking their first card face-down and their second card face-up. Players have a variety of options to choose from after their first 2 cards are dealt out. However, analyzing the dealer’s up-card is essential to making the decision to “hit” or “stand” on your own hand.

Players will normally stand on anything from 16 to 21, and will normally take a hit on anything 11 and below. Players can hit as many times as they please as long as they don’t go over 21. Taking multiple cards (hits) is a calculated risk that must be taken if the dealer is showing a strong up card such as a face card or an Ace.

Playing and Winning in Blackjack:

Blackjack, also referred to as “21,” is played on a points system that gives numeric values (see “Blackjack Card Values” below) to every card in a single deck of playing cards. 21 is the best score one can achieve in the game, and players should be focusing on getting as close to that number as possible without “busting.” Players who score a 21 on their hand will not only have “Blackjack,” but they’ll automatically win and also get paid 3:2 on their bet.

Players who beat the dealer’s hole cards will also get paid double their original bet, provided they have a number equal to or less than 21. If the dealer busts, players will also get paid out accordingly as long as they too have not busted.

Note: If the dealer is dealt Blackjack – or 21 – all losing bets are immediately collected from the players. The only time a player will not forfeit their bet on a dealer Blackjack is if they too have 21.

Blackjack Card Values:

Each card numbered at 10 and below (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) have a value equal to their actual number. Suits have no effect on the value (4 of clubs will have the same value as a 4 of diamonds). For example, if a player draws the following cards: 2, 5, and 8 – the value of all three would be 15.

Face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) all have values equaling 10. Like numbered cards, different suits have no effect on the value of the face cards. For example, if a player draws a Jack and a King for their first two up-cards, that will equal a 20 – the second-highest score behind a Blackjack or 21.

The last card – the Ace – has a special value in Blackjack. It can count as either 1 or 11, with the actual number being dependent on what helps out the most with a particular hand. Being dealt an Ace and any face card is an automatic Blackjack and the player will be paid out 3:2 immediately.
Blackjack Terms:

Hit
When a player chooses to take another card after their initial 2 are dealt out. Players can hit as many times as they wish, provided they do not bust.
Stand
When a player chooses to not take any more cards. This will normally occur if a player has a semi-decent holding or if the dealer is showing a weak up-card.
Double or Double Down
This occurs when a player doubles his wager after the first two cards are dealt. When a player chooses to double it normally means they feel they have a great chance of making a winning hand on their 3rd card, subsequently winning more money. When a player doubles, the wager must be placed next to their original bet before the request for a 3rd card is made.
Split
This can be done when a player has two identically numbered cards dealt to them on the initial deal. Basically, both cards are split and a new wager is made – essentially making 2 hands. To split, a player must put in an identical wager to their original one before the next cards are dealt out to the split hand.
Surrender
An option given to players that allows them to give up their cards and half their original wager if he/she feels they have a hand that cannot win against the dealer’s. This is only allowed in some land-based casinos.
Bust or Break
If a player’s cards exceed 21, then they have gone “bust.” Their original bets are immediately taken by the dealer once this happens.
